A Clayton County inmate who authorities said walked away from a jail work detail overnight is back in custody thanks to a resourceful local business owner.

Deputies told Channel 2 Action News that Evaristo Ramorves-Avalos was being held on charges of reckless conduct and giving a false name when he walked away from the jail.

Ramorves-Avalos was taken back into custody at a nearby truck equipment company about 8 a.m.

Trevor Sagon and his brother run Sagon Trucks and Equipment in the 8800 block of Tara Boulevard, near the Clayton County Jail.

“I’ve heard of inmates breaking out, but they usually catch them within the first hour or so, but nothing like this,” Sagon said. “It was a pretty wild experience.”

Sagon said he heard about the search for the inmate on the news before coming to work and “knew it was in this area.”

Sagon told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that after arriving and starting his workday, “something just hit me and I said, ‘you know, I’m going to try and help these guys out.’”

“I thought like a fugitive – where would I go?” Sagon said. On a hunch, Sagon decided to check out a 26-foot box truck parked on the property.

“I decided to open it and look inside and I saw two feet,” he said. “I closed the door and screamed, ‘hey, hey, I got him.’ I ran back over here with the officer and he apprehended him.”

Sagan said he wasn’t scared by the experience, “just a lot of adrenalin. I’m glad I could help the sheriff’s office and be a good citizen.”
