Georgia may be the best place for women to stick their heads through the glass ceiling.

Seven companies from Georgia were among those featured on a gender equality index list released Tuesday by new tech startup LedBetter. The list ranks companies based on the percentage of women in high level leadership positions.

LedBetter was founded in 2013 by journalist Iris Kuo and marketing executive Camille Ricketts to track major companies’ gender equality.

“Companies are putting it out there, you just have to dig to find it,” Ricketts said.

United Parcel Services ranked No. 57 on the list, the highest of the seven companies, with 27 percent of women on their board of directors and 27 percent in executive leadership positions.

The Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines ranked the lowest of 230 companies at No. 190. Women composed 12 percent of its board of directors and 11 percent of its executive leadership.

Delta’s ranking may not be surprising since transportation was the worst industry for women to advance in, Ricketts said. Other airlines such as United Airlines and Continental Airlines ranked similar to Delta.

The list has 230 companies pulled from the Fortune 500 and the Forbes Most Valuable Brands lists.
