Two men the GBI described as "Bubba Bombers" are facing charges after a Georgia forest ranger found pipe bombs, ammunition and drugs during a deer poaching investigation in Lamar County.
Seth Roberts, 23, and Wesley Peters, 22, are facing a number of charges, including felony drug possession, possession of explosive devices and multiple firearms charges. They are being held in the Lamar County jail.
Keith Page, a ranger with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, told 750AM and 95.5FM NewsTalk WSB that he was searching Monday afternoon in an area where he believed a deer had been shot out of season.
He said that when he came to a house where he believed the deer had been taken, he "looked over ... and on top of a pine stump I noticed a device that looked like a pipe bomb that had been exploded. Examining the device I noticed it still had some gunpowder down in the barrel."
A search of the house turned up more pipe bombs, ammunition, marijuana, a copy of "The Anarchist Cookbook" and a book with instructions on making weapons fully automatic, WSB reported.
Page said the two suspects told him they were using the bombs to reduce the armadillo population on their property.
"I think that was just a joking scenario. There were several armadillo holes in the yard; however, I think they were trying to downplay the situation," said Page.
GBI spokesman John Bankhead said investigators are still unsure what the intent of the two men was.
"You run into these situations out in the countryside where these guys, what we call ‘Bubba Bombers,' like to play around with these things," he told WSB. "But they don't know the serious nature of what they're dealing with and also the serious charges they're facing."
