A Fulton County police officer shot a suspected car thief early Friday in Union City.

The officer, whose name has not been released, pulled over two suspects who were in a car that had been stolen from a MARTA station, said Cpl. Kay Lester, Fulton County police spokeswoman.

One suspect drove away in the stolen vehicle, and the other suspect ran away, Lester said. The officer pursued the suspect to a Motel 6 behind a Chevron Station at 3860 Flat Shoals Road, Lester said, and and some point the officer shot the suspect. It was not clear what prompted the shooting.

The suspect, who was not identified, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Union City police are handling the investigation.

The police officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Lester said.
