The city of East Point is offering a Citizens Police Academy March 5 through May 7.

The Citizens Police Academy is a program designed to acquaint citizens of East Point with the organization and interior workings of the East Point Police Department. The program is anticipated to foster and enhance police-community relations and to raise community awareness of police operations and training. City officials hope this will promote harmony within the community.

The course of study is much the same as the regular police academy program, however, citizens graduating from the course will not be police offiers and won’t have any other the authority afforded POST-certified officers.

Students are expected to attend class once a week. Course topics will range from crime prevention, drug enforcement, criminal investigation and the safety of firearms. The program will also include a ride-along with police officers.

Registration is due by Feb. 26.
