A Roswell woman’s night of drunk driving led to her and a 12-year-old passenger crashing into a fence and nearly plummeting into a retention pond.

Investigators with the Roswell Police Department said Erica Nelson, 31, crashed her 2012 Chevrolet Malibu into the fence along Declaration Drive last Friday. Upon impact, her car dangled 40 feet above the edge of the pond.

Department spokeswoman Lisa Holland told Channel 2 Action News Wednesday the only thing saving Nelson, 31, and the male juvenile passenger from falling into the pond was the wrecked ironclad fence. The child was Nelson's boyfriend's son, Holland said.

Witnesses told police they later caught Nelson and the child leaving the accident scene and officers were able to track her down nearby.

“When the officer spoke to the driver, he immediately noticed she was under the influence of alcohol,” Holland told Channel 2. “She was very unsteady, dropping things on the ground.”

Nelson was charged with the following misdemeanors: child endangerment, driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane.
