A 49-year-old Canton man was killed Thursday afternoon when his truck crashed behind a residence in Cherokee County, authorities said.

The incident involving Ricky Lusk was called a “freak accident” by Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Tim Cavender. Lusk was identified by Cherokee sheriff’s spokesman Jay Baker.

When firefighters arrived to the site on Lacy Road in the Avery community, they found the pickup on its side, Cavender said.

Initial reports indicated Lusk had driven to a nearby lake, Cavender said. As he was returning, the truck apparently hit a piece of equipment, which caused it to flip.

Lusk was partially ejected through the passenger-side window, Cavender said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no other vehicles involved and no other injuries reported, Cavender said. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
