Officers are searching for a driver they say caused a head-on crash that injured several people early Friday, police said.

Officials closed off an area near South Indian Creek Drive at Chedworth Way in DeKalb County.

DeKalb police Lt. Mark Lavigne said officers learned of a car chase about 4:15 a.m. A pickup truck chased a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo with two people inside it.

“That pickup truck, it appears, rammed the Monte Carlo several times from behind,” Lavigne said. “At some point, that pickup truck lost control and went off the road.”

That’s when the truck’s driver got out of the vehicle and started firing at the Monte Carlo, striking the driver, Lavigne said.

“He went off the road, crossed the double yellow [lines] and struck a Honda traveling the opposite direction head on,” Lavigne said.

The Honda was carrying an 18-year-old man and two children.

“Everyone has been rushed to an area hospital that was in the Honda,” Lavigne said. “They are in stable condition at this point.”

The driver struck by a bullet was also taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

Police are still working to determine if a passenger in the Monte Carlo was struck and if there was a passenger in the pickup truck who also fired at the car.
