A DeKalb County school resource officer shot a 16-year-old student near Redan High's campus Friday afternoon, a school system spokesman confirmed.

The 16-year-old attends DeKalb Alternative School, spokesman Jeff Dickerson told the AJC. It is believed he was tussling with students from Redan.

At around 3:30 p.m., the resource officer responded to Field Green Drive in the Hidden Hills subdivision, where the scuffle had intensified. According to the officer, he heard a gunshot and then witnessed the 16-year-old holding a weapon. The officer responded, shooting the teen four times, Dickerson said.

Donteveis Yearwood, 16, said he witnessed two teens fighting and saw a third pull a gun and shoot it into the air, scattering the crowd.

Yearwood, who was interviewed by police, said he heard more shots as he ran. When he looked back he saw the officer standing over the boy.

The student is in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital where he is "alert and talking," the school spokesman said. The alternative school serves students between 4th and 12 grade who have been expelled from their previous school.

Crisscrossing yellow police tape has closed nearby residential street Fieldgreen Drive.

Michael Brown, who lives adjacent to the school, said he heard six shots and immediately attempted to contact his son, a Redan student.

Brown then walked over to the small crowd gathered that had gathered about 60 feet from his home.

“[The school resource officer] was hovering over the kid and keeping everybody back with his revolver” said Brown, adding that he was disturbed by the sight of an officer pointing his gun at the dozen or so students standing nearby.

“He was laying on his stomach and bleeding profusely from his midsection,” said Brown, who added he saw a small caliber handgun on the ground near the boy.

Brown said he has lived next to the school since 1993 and this is the first time something like this has happened. Still, he said Redan could use more police officers.
