DeKalb County has renewed its call to get 100,000 people to take Marquel’s Pledge.
The pledge is a county-led initiative to raise awareness of the dangers of firing guns in celebration. A stray bullet from such a celebration is blamed for the death of 4-year-old Marquel Peters last year as he sat in church on New Year’s Eve.
DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis urged more to sign the pledge on Tuesday, while flanked by state Sen. Gloria Butler and Marquel’s mother, Nathalee Peters.
The county has since won a national award for the effort, which has garnered 5,000-plus signatures. Butler, D-Stone Mountain, helped shepherd a resolution supporting the work in the General Assembly.
