The DeKalb History Center will the honor the late Sheriff-Elect Derwin Brown and a handful of other prominent local leaders as part of its fifth annual Black History Month Celebration next month.
Brown was shot in 2000, days before he was to have replaced Sheriff Sidney Dorsey. Dorsey was later convicted of plotting the murder in a state trial and is serving a life sentence.
In addition to Brown, the presentation will honor Dr. William C. Brown posthumously for his work as a DeKalb library trustee; former county commissioner and civic activist, John Evans; Southwest DeKalb High baseball coach, William “Buck” Godfrey; and funeral director Gregory B. Levett, Sr. Carolyn Glenn, publisher of the Champion newspaper, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
The program runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Old Courthouse in the Square in Decatur.
