Some ailing metro Atlanta children have been getting surprise – and elaborate – birthday celebrations, thanks in large part to a DeKalb County employee.
La’Keitha Carlos, who is an assistant county attorney, launched the local chapter of It’s My Birthday this summer and is getting a mix of surprise, excitement and disbelief from the children, according to a news release from Carlos’ alma mater, Clark Atlanta University.
“Many kids have never celebrated their birthdays with a cake or balloons, let alone an entire party,” Carlos said. “Starting this organization in Atlanta has been the greatest gift I could have been given, and as a mother it blesses me every time I see these kids smile.”

The “extravagant celebrations” are intended for children suffering from serious ailments. The parties are complete with a personalized gift, a birthday cake and other “party essentials all kids should have the opportunity to enjoy.”
Carlos’ chapter is having impressive results so far. It recently partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to help create surprise birthday celebrations. It also just received a grant from the Atlanta Braves Foundation, the news release said.
The group’s board of directors consists of seven members, five of whom are CAU alumni.
