On Friday, the DeKalb County Police Department swore in 12 new officers as part of the agency's goal to hire more than 150 officers this year.

Like some other police agencies, the department, which pays new officers between $39,000 and $42,000, has long been down officers. It’s hosting a series of hiring events to stem the bleeding, with one planned for June 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1950 West Exchange Place in Tucker.

The agency is trying different tactics to get recruits, such as social media, advertising and strengthening its connections to churches, which could bring in recruits.

But it isn’t a quick process to get a new cop on the street.

The officers who took the oath Friday went through 26 weeks of intensive training at the police academy. Following graduation, they will then complete eight to 12 weeks of training in the field.
