After weeks of notice and preparation, crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation and a detail of state prisoners cleared a homeless camp in Hall County, the Gainesville Times reported.

The decision to close the camp, which was made in September, was prompted by a request from the DOT, which owns the right of way, officials said. The camp had been under the Queen City Bridge in Gainesville.

The DOT said the area had become unsafe for its workers, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Some homeless men Tuesday were hanging out near the former camp, which had been inhabited since the 1990s.

“It’s fixing to get cold and wet out here,” one man said.
