Man shot dead after answering door

One man was shot dead and another man was wounded shortly after midnight Sunday at the Concepts 21 apartment complex in Roswell, according to police.

Police identified the dead man as Ladell Deon Crumpton, 31.

At 12:09 a.m., police received a call that shots had been fired at the complex, according to Roswell police spokesman Lt. James McGee. Officers were sent to 297 Old Holcomb Bridge Way, where they found two men who had been shot.

Police were told that a man answered the door, was shot in the neck and later died at North Fulton Hospital. FRAN JEFFRIES

Man dies in crash at end of runway

A man was killed late Sunday morning when his single-engine personal aircraft crashed at the end of a runway at the Jackson County airport.

The man’s plane apparently had engine trouble about 500 feet above ground, said Steve Nichols, Jackson County Emergency Services director.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration’s website, the plane was an amateur-built aircraft manufactured in 1972.

The FAA’s registry lists David J. Rushlow as an owner. Nichols said a maintenance worker had seen the pilot working on the plane earlier in the morning, and the pilot had been practicing takeoffs and landings. ROSALIND BENTLEY

Church sanctuary goes up in flames

An early-morning fire destroyed nearly a third of a Troup County church on Sunday.

Firefighters from the Troup County Fire Department arrived on the scene at 7:03 a.m. to find the sanctuary of Teaver Road Baptist Church fully ablaze, said Fire Chief Jerry Heard. No one was inside the brick building when firefighters arrived.

As 58 firefighters worked to contain the fire, several members of the congregation gathered in the road by the church to pray and hold a small service, Heard said.

Police find body in Union City

Police are investigating the death of a man who was found near Mason and Hunter roads in Union City on Sunday morning.

During routine patrols, an officer discovered the man’s body between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m., according to Union City police spokesman Chris Murphy.

The man’s identification has not been released pending notification of kin. FRAN JEFFRIES

Two traveling to BCS die in crash

A Riverdale man died in a traffic accident in Mississippi on Saturday when a motor home carrying a group of people from Georgia to New Orleans to attend the college football championship game overturned, officials said Sunday. On Sunday, the driver of the motor home also died.

Forrest County (Miss.) Coroner Butch Benedict told the Associated Press that 47-year-old Darryl Parker of Riverdale died in the accident on a busy interstate in south Mississippi, and 66-year-old Alfred Holt Jr. of Lithonia died Sunday.

Authorities said 13 people were traveling in a rented recreational vehicle from the Atlanta area to New Orleans, where they planned to attend the Bowl Championship Series title game between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama. FRAN JEFFRIES

Two people killed in head-on crash

A 17-year-old person and another, 20, were killed, and at least three other people were injured, in a head-on car crash at the intersection of Webb Gin House Road and Grayson Highway.

The accident occurred late Saturday night, according to Gwinnett County Police spokesman Jeffery Richter.

The car sideswiped another before slamming into a pickup truck, according to Channel 2 Action News. ROSALIND BENTLEY

Maid finds body in hotel room

An unidentified African-American man was found dead in a DeKalb County hotel room on Sunday.

The man’s body was found by a maid who was about to clean the room at the Super 8 hotel, 1600 Crescent Centre Blvd. in Tucker, according to the DeKalb County Police Department.

Police did not say whether foul play was suspected in the man’s death. ROSALIND BENTLEY
