A witness who claimed he saw a sniper firing a rifle at a Clayton County school bus was arrested Friday on charges of making a false report.

The claim on May 14 prompted the school district and Clayton County authorities to go on heightened alert, with an increased police presence and escorts for buses.

Jonesboro police said Codarrius Rayshun Brewer of Hampton was arrested and charged after admitting he made up the incident.

Police said a witness claimed that around 7 a.m. he saw a man crouched in the backyard of a residence in the area of Paladin Drive in Hampton and pointing what appeared to be a rifle at a passing school bus.

The witness said he yelled at the man, "which caused the subject to drop the rifle and flee on foot from the location," Clayton County police spokesman Phong Nguyen said at the time, adding that the a rifle was recovered.

Buses in the area serve Kemp Elementary, Kemp Primary and Lovejoy High School.

Police said Brewer also placed the rifle and a note near the backyard fence.

He was also charged with obstruction.
