After being stopped for driving the wrong way on Highway 316, an Acworth man led officers on a chase and intentionally hit four patrol cars and tried to hit another in his attempt to flee, a police report said.

Collin Michael Fant, 22, has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement and one count each of possession of a Schedule 1 controlled substance, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude police and driving on the wrong side of the road.

A Lawrenceville police officer stopped Fant at 2:18 a.m. June 2 after seeing him driving the wrong way on an exit ramp, a police report says. Fant “seemed confused” when the officer asked for his license, the report says. When the officer asked Fant to put the car in park and get out, Fant drove off, according to the report.

When the officer tried to pursue Fant, Fant did a U-turn and headed back towards the exit ramp. Another officer tried to use his patrol car to stop Fant from going any further, but Fant drove past it, going the wrong way on Highway 316, the report says. Fant then drove onto the other side of the highway to drive the right way.

Fant tried to take the next exit, but an officer again tried to use his patrol car to stop Fant, the report says. Fant turned around and started driving the wrong way down 316, according to the report. A Gwinnett County police officer who was driving on the highway saw Fant driving the wrong way and tried to stop him. Fant steered his car towards the officer’s car, and the officer had to get out of the way to avoid being hit, the report says.

A Lawrenceville officer was soon able to get Fant’s car to stop, and other officers used their cars in an attempt to “box in” Fant’s car. Fant then began “ramming” the police cars with his car, trying to break free, the report says. Police tried to use a stun gun on Fant twice, but it had no affect, the report says.

Fant then exited the car and tried to run away, the report says. An officer tackled him, but Fant continued to resist and refused to put his hands behind his back, the report says. An officer shocked Fant with the stun gun again, and Fant was subdued and put into handcuffs.

Once officers searched Fant’s car they found a “spent hypodermic syringe” in the floorboard, the report says. Paramedics took Fant to the hospital because he had an elevated heart rate. Fant “began to doze off and was ‘on the nod,’” so a doctor gave him a dose of Narcan, the report says. Fant told an officer that he had used heroin, according to the report.

After Fant was medically cleared, he was transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center. He is being held without bond.
