A trio of teens traveling in a stolen Jaguar planned to drive from North Carolina to Florida.

But the joyride came to a halt when the teens were stopped Tuesday morning in Cherokee County, thanks to a nearby cell tower.

Police in North Carolina contacted Cherokee County officials about the stolen vehicle, which had a cell phone inside that transmitted from a cell tower in Ball Ground, Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said. A sheriff's deputy spotted the Jaguar traveling south on I-575 and stopped the vehicle near the Bells Ferry off ramp, Baker said.

The driver and two passengers, all from Waynesville, N.C., were arrested.

The driver, Dustin Surrett, 19, was charged with theft by receiving a motor vehicle and has outstanding warrants in Haywood County, N.C., Baker said. Tessa Upton, 17, was also charged with theft by receiving a motor vehicle. Both were booked into the Cherokee County Jail with a $5,700.00 bond.

A 15-year-old juvenile passenger, also charged with theft by receiving a motor vehicle, was transported to the Marietta Youth Detention Center.
