The Snellville City Council approved funding recently for a sidewalk leading to Oak Road Park. The pathway will connect Scenic Highway at the RaceTrac gas station to a five-acre passive park. A passive park is a public area designated as a park, but does not afford facilities or equipment for exercise or play. It is sometimes called a nature park or greenspace.

Funding for the $738,000 project comes from 2014 Special Local Option Sales Tax.

Multiplex LLC is expected to begin work by mid-May. A pre-construction meeting for the community will be held 6:30 p.m. May 3 in City Hall, 2342 Oak Road.

This is the first of two sidewalk projects funded with 2014 SPLOST dollars, according to City Manager Butch Sanders. The other sidewalk project will be built in front of South Gwinnett High School and travel east to Rockdale Circle.

Construction began on Phase 1 of the Oak Road Park in December 2013, ten years after the land was purchased in 2003 with Governor’s Green Space Program funds.
