A man was shot and killed late Thursday while attacking his father during a domestic dispute in Cobb County, police say.

Officers were dispatched to a call of a shooting around 11:06 p.m. July 4 at a home in the 3800 block of Sanders Road, which is off Powder Springs Road in Marietta. Cops arrived and tried to save the man’s life, but he died at the scene, police say.

Witnesses told Cobb police that Damon Brown, 45, began “attacking family members.” During this dispute, Brown began to strangle his father, Jimmie Brown, 65. Family members tried to intervene, but they were not able to break up the altercation, Cobb police said.

A 31-year-old man who was inside the home “believed the only way to save the father was to shoot the son,” Cobb police said in a statement.

The case remains under investigation. Police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk said the department doesn’t have additional information at this time about the shooting. No charges have been filed at this point.

Cobb police have also not indicated how the shooter knows the Browns. Anyone with information is asked to call Cobb police at 770-499-3945.
