Smyrna-based K-9 Coach dog training company was selected Monday as the 2011 Cobb Chamber small business of the year.

K-9 Coach was selected from the top 25 small businesses in Cobb, which were named earlier this year. The canine company is owned by Amber Burckhalter and employees 26 people.

“I started this business out of a passion for dogs,” said Burckhalter, 36. “Our objective is to enrich lives and ultimately to keep dogs in secure homes.”

The company, founded in 2001, became the first-ever company to be voted Best of Atlanta Dog Training, Best of Atlanta Dog Boarding and Best of Atlanta Doggie Daycare in 2009. K-9 Coach will represent Cobb County in the statewide small business of the year competition.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the presenting sponsor of the Cobb Chamber Small Business of the Year program.
