CNN intruders deny Facebook reports
The DeKalb County teenagers who accessed a secure area at CNN's global headquarters were not there to update their Facebook status, one of the teens said Tuesday.
An Atlanta police spokeswoman said the two were updating that status when arrested Friday morning, but Aldayne Fearon, of Decatur, said he never went on a computer. The 18-year-old was arrested along with his neighbor, Frances Mutemwa, 17, inside the cable network's newsroom around 4:30 a.m.
The pair were transported to jail but were released, without bond, later in the day. Criminal trespass charges brought against each teen were dismissed, said Tracy Flanagan, a spokeswoman for the Fulton County jail. No reason was given.
Mutemwa admitted sneaking over a wall into the newsroom area with his friend early Friday morning. They managed to evade immediate capture by posing as waiters, he told the AJC.
The pair were caught after Mutemwa showed some CNN employees his Facebook page. His profile picture shows the 17-year-old posing with friends in front of another restricted area inside the bowels of the CNN Center.
"That was taken at a Hawks game. I have no idea how we got down there," Mutemwa said.
That photo got people a little nervous, he said, adding, "It was probably not a good idea showing them that."
Word of Fearon and Mutemwa's misadventure went viral Friday afternoon, with most news outlets highlighting the Facebook angle. The Huffington Post took it a step further, referencing a study by the Chinese Academy of Sciences showing how web addicts experience brain changes similar to those of drug addicts or alcoholics.
For the record, Mutemwa hasn't updated his status since Monday.
