The 10-year-old boy who was hit crossing a busy highway near a Riverdale elementary school last week was still in critical condition Monday.

Artavius Hall crossed Ga. 85 without the protection of a crosswalk and was struck by a man commuting to work, police said. The driver stopped and called for help, and a bystander at a nearby bus stop administered CPR.

The Clayton County police report of the incident said the driver of the 2005 Chrysler 300 sedan had just passed through a green light and that the boy’s dark clothing — from his black sneakers to his black woolen cap — and the lack of street lights may have contributed to the accident early Wednesday.

Hall was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and was listed in critical condition last week. The hospital said Monday that his condition was unchanged.

The incident occurred about a mile south of Church Street Elementary School in Riverdale, but police could not say whether the boy was headed there. He was struck near a C-Tran bus stop on Ga. 85.

The driver who struck Hall, Willie Heath Jr. of Jonesboro, was not charged with any offense. He praised two people from the bus stop who came to his aid, but said others ignored his pleas for help.

“I was begging for help,” he said. “They got on their bus and left.”
