Cherokee County police arrested a Canton man early Sunday morning and charged him with murder in the death of his 19-year-old girlfriend.

Trevor Nuckles, 21, was being held without bond at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center on Sunday.

Deputies, responding to a 911 call that came in just before 1 a.m. Sunday, discovered that Dejanirra Elrod had been shot five times at a home in the 300 block of Pea Ridge Road. Elrod was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta where she later died of her injuries.

Though there were no witnesses to the shooting, investigators were told Nuckles fled the house on foot after trying to prevent the homeowner from calling 911. A Canton police officer soon found him walking near the River Ridge Apartments, where he lived with Elrod. He was then taken into custody.

Investigators later found a handgun, which they believe to be the murder weapon, about 50 yards from the scene of the alleged shooting in the woods off Pine Grove Road — between the home on Pea Ridge and the River Ridge Apartments.

Nuckles faces charges of murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and obstruction of a 911 call.
