A conceptual design for a veteran’s monument at the recently opened Cherokee Veterans Park, with a flag pole at the center surrounded by a star-shaped court representing the nation’s service branches, has been approved by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners.

The structure would have at its center a Flag Monument with a pole and 6-foot-tall stone monument with inset granite panels. This would be surrounded by a Service Branch Court, and outside that, a large, open Reflection Lawn and a POW/MIA Plaza.

The design is the product of meetings this summer involving architects of Lose & Associates, county staff and a steering committee of military veterans. Lose recommended a $340,000 budget for the project. The county board at a later date will consider a final design and construction contracts.

The monument is to honor Cherokee residents who served in the armed services. Cherokee Veterans Park opened in August on 149 acres at 7345 Cumming Highway, Canton.
