The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has accepted a federal grant to buy and distribute up to 500 NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radios as part of the county’s emergency preparedness efforts.

Federal funds totaling $18,936.75 for the radios and $1,262 to administer the program will be matched by $6,312.25 in county funds, staff said in a report to commissioners.

The radios must first be distributed to special needs populations and critical facilities that are most vulnerable to severe weather, according to a letter confirming the grant award from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“Remaining weather radios will be distributed to Cherokee County … (and) Ball Ground, Canton, Holly Springs, Nelson, Waleska and Woodstock citizens on a first-come, first-served basis to supplement any other type of severe weather warning, such as warning sirens or mass alert system,” the letter says. “This will be done in conjunction with preparedness, education and outreach programs.”
