Firefighters evacuated the first floor of a Midtown Atlanta apartment building for about an hour Monday because of a chemical spill.

Maintenance workers spilled a chlorine-based cleaning product while working on the first floor of the Aqua at 20 Tenth St., Atlanta Fire spokesman Capt. Bill May said.

"We went in and checked it out," May said. "It wasn't a level that was considered to be toxic."

Firefighters evacuated the first floor and parking garage as a precaution while they aired out the building, May said. They also temporarily closed the intersection.

Paramedics transported one person to Grady Memorial Hospital to be checked out. Two other people also drove themselves to the hospital as a precaution, May said. The injuries are not life-threatening, he said.

Healthcare at College Park, a nursing home in Fulton County, GA, stands shuttered with its door chained on July 26, 2025, having closed in recent months. Researchers at Brown University developed a list of U.S. nursing homes they predicted were at risk of closing based on 2023 data, and would be at elevated risk of closing due to the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act's cuts to Medicaid. Healthcare at College Park was on their list. It survived past its last federal inspection in August of 2024 but has now closed down. The bill's biggest provisions will roll out over years starting Jan. 1. (Ariel Hart/AJC)
