Candidates who qualified for Fayette County’s primary and general elections for commission and school board include a diverse roster by both party and gender.

For the Board of Commissioners contests, District 1 Republican incumbent Eric Maxwell will be challenged by Sonja Renee Gibson; Democrat Vickie Butler also qualified. District 2 Republican incumbent Randy Ognio will face former commissioner Lee Hearn, with no Democrat running for that seat. Two other Republicans, Ann Wittenberg and William Yarde, will go up against incumbent Charles Oddo in the primary for the District 5 seat, with Democrat William Lightle also qualifying.

For the Board of Education posts, the retirement of Republican Barry Marchman in District 1 will mean a November contest between Republican Randy Hough and Democrat Candice Aaron. In District 3, incumbent and board chair Scott Hollowell will face three other Republicans: Martha Blanchard, former board member Marion Key, and Cornelius Sullivan Jr., with no Democratic opponent. In District 5, Republican incumbent Brian Anderson will compete with Mike Krehbiel in the primary, with Democrat Catherine Remkes also qualifying.

The primary election is May 19.
