A Buford man flew into the air, crashed to the floor and died in what may be a freak accident at a mechanic shop.

David Key, 48, suffered a severe head injury Tuesday and later died, according to a police report. Police found Key unresponsive and lying in a pool of his blood. An air hose tire inflator was lying on his face.

Two men said they heard a loud boom and saw Key shoot up into the air before crashing, according to the report.

Key had just finished mounting a new tire to a wheel before bending over to add air to another tire, according to the report. Moments later, witnesses heard a loud boom and saw blood coming from Key’s head.

Key was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he died.

The Gwinnett Medical Examiner senior investigator was not immediately available for comment Wednesday afternoon.
