The body of a Gainesville man was found floating on Lake Lanier on Saturday afternoon, a Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

The body was identified as Thomas Wayne Chapman, 36, Deputy Stephen Wilbanks said.

A boater discovered the body about 2:30 p.m. just south of Don Carter State Park on the northern end of the lake, Wilbanks said.

An autopsy will be performed by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. There were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play, according to Wilbanks.

The body was likely in the water for more than one day, Wilbanks said.
