A capacity crowd attended the Feb. 24 Fayette County Board of Education meeting to voice objections to replacing the long-standing, abstinence-based sex education curriculum with more comprehensive health and physical education textbooks.

Most of the two dozen speakers supported keeping the current “Choosing the Best” materials, with some claiming that teaching middle and high school students about contraception, sexually transmitted infections and other topics could lead to “emotional turmoil” and “[set] them up for a statutory rape conviction.” Two female physicians spoke in favor of providing students with “medically accurate information” that would more effectively prevent pregnancy and disease. Several speakers alleged that the 13-member committee currently reviewing new materials was improperly formed.

Following comments, the board voted 4-1 to review the committee’s procedures at its next work session at 2 p.m. on March 9.
