“My grandfather was really sick, and I could not get to Chicago too often to visit him. So, I started volunteering [at Bingo night] as way to give back and keep that connection going," recalls Evan Melcher, project coordinator of Bingo Night at NurseCare of Buckhead, who started volunteering at the facility nine years ago.
The Bingo Night takes place on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 6- 8 p.m at NurseCare of Buckhead, and is coordinated through Hands on Atlanta.
Melcher, along with co-coordinator Beth Sarantapoulas, arrange the monthly game night for the residents of the assisted living facility in Buckhead. With a series of changes of volunteers and with his dedication to the game night, Melcher became the project coordinator of the Hands on Atlanta event. “It really is something fun for not only myself, but everyone here,” said Melcher, who has been coming to Bingo night for nine years. "And, over time, you wind up making some good friends too which is great in its own sense.”
Game night takes place after dinner time, and usually gets more than 20 players who join in for the relaxation and light competition. “Bingo is one of the favorite activities of our facility. We depend greatly on our volunteers and Hands on Atlanta has been faithful to our facility for years,” said Coretta Hurt, administrator of NurseCare of Buckhead. “I cannot say thank you enough for the smiles they put on my residents’ faces.”
