An 11-month-old girl was in critical condition Tuesday night after being burned by hot liquid in her home, according to Gwinnett County fire officials.

The baby, whose name was not released, apparently pulled a hot pot onto herself, causing extensive burns to her entire body, said Lt. Eric Eberly with the Gwinnett fire department.

Family members driving the baby to the hospital flagged down firefighters, who were returning to their station, at the intersection of Dacula and Fence roads shortly after 5 p.m., Eberly said. Because of the extent of the child's injuries, firefighters called for additional rescue units.

"When they turned the child over to our care, our paramedic firefighters immediately noticed the extensiveness of the burns as well as the criticalness of the child’s condition," Eberly said in a statement.

Emergency responders requested a helicopter transport the baby to the hospital, but weather conditions did not allow for helicopter transport, Eberly said. The child was taken by ambulance to the burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital.
