Atlanta weather | Lightning suspected in house fires

May 28, 2015

Don’t put up your umbrellas any time soon. More rain is on the way for metro Atlanta, forecasters said.

Several weather systems brought a series of storms through the area through Thursday evening, according to chief meteorologist Glenn Burns with Channel 2 Action News. The storms are moving only about 5 miles an hour, he said.

“They can cause quite a bit of rain in short order,” Burns said.

Lightning is believed to have sparked house fires in Gwinnett and Fulton counties late Thursday afternoon.

No one was injured in a fire in Johns Creek, but a home in the Cambridge neighborhood was damaged by fire. In Lawrenceville, investigators believe lightning struck a tree near a vacant home, sparking a fire in the attic.

Scattered storms are again possible Friday, when the chance of rain drops to 40 percent. Saturday should be mostly dry with highs reaching the mid-80s, Burns said. But Sunday could be wet again, with a 40 percent chance of rain.

Then the next weather system will move in, bringing even more rain, Burns said.

Looking ahead to next week, the forecast includes a 60 to 70 percent chance for rain each day.
