Temperatures might crack the freezing mark Tuesday afternoon, but don't expect any appreciable relief from the icy conditions that have made travel dangerous and at times impossible across metro Atlanta.

After the sun goes down, the mercury will take a nosedive into the teens and low 20s, refreezing any water on the roads from what little ice might have melted during the afternoon.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton predicts that afternoon highs will remain a degree or two below freezing on Wednesday and Thursday, with lows in the teens, so don't look for any significant thawing until Friday, when highs should climb into the low 40s.

If there is a silver lining to the forecast, it is this: Once Tuesday's freezing rain and drizzle clear out, there's no more precipitation expected through the rest of this week.

Temperatures at 10 a.m. Tuesday ranged from 30 degrees in Dunwoody and at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to 32 in Cartersville.
