Film screenings, a dance party and live performances are just a few of the cultural events you will see at Atlanta’s public arts festival this week.

The city kicked off its eighth annual public arts festival, ELEVATE, on Monday in the historic Pittsburgh neighborhood in southwest Atlanta. This year's theme, Cultural Capital, focuses on community, access, memory and development. The festival's events were curated by the African Diasporic Art Museum of Atlanta.

"As developers make plans to reimagine Pittsburgh, we will explore the often overlooked yet deeply embedded cultural resource of one of Atlanta's oldest neighborhoods- it's people," ADAMA executive director Fahamu Pecou said in a statement. "Cultural Capital explores the very real, fragile, and human stories embedded in communities like Pittsburgh and its past, present, and future."

The Pittsburgh community will be home to more than a dozen events throughout the week, ending in a festival at Pittman Park on 950 Garibaldi St.

Monday’s festivities kicked off with a noon storytelling workshop at the Pittman Recreation Center. The festival will also mark the opening of the newly redesigned Pyramid Grocery Food Store. The updated design now emphasizes access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The store’s exterior will also feature murals by local artists.

The ELEVATE festival first began in 2011 as a way to provide greater access to free visual, cultural and performance art. For the festival's full schedule visit https://www.elevateatlart.com/.
