Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has vetoed legislation that would have made Baker Street run two ways between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Piedmont Avenue.
The move surprised Andre Dickens, chairman of the Atlanta City Council’s Transportation Committee. Dickens said the legislation that the City Council approved Monday had been the product of a months long discussion.
No one in Bottoms' administration indicated that the mayor opposed the conversion, which is part of a larger plan to convert one-way streets in downtown and Midtown to two-lane thoroughfares, Dickens said.
Josh Rowan, the head of Renew Atlanta and Planning Commissioner Tim Keane had advocated for the conversion.
Bottoms has yet to deliver a letter explaining the veto to the city council.
