Atlanta police Wednesday were looking for two men who fled a traffic stop on foot after one of the men pulled a handgun on officers.

An officer fired at the armed suspect, but both men escaped a perimeter set up around the incident scene in northwest Atlanta, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The incident began around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after an officer tried to stop a suspicious vehicle, which turned out to be stolen.

"He got behind the vehicle and put on his blue lights," Atlanta police Capt. Van Hobbs told Channel 2. "The vehicle would pull over, and then as the officer would start to get out of his car, it would take off."

The car finally stopped on Whitaker Street near Poland Street and the driver ran from the vehicle.

"As he did that, the vehicle rolled back into the patrol car," Hobbs said. "At that time, the passenger got out of the vehicle and pointed what appeared to be a handgun back at the officer."

Hobbs said the officer chased the passenger, and when he got close to him, "again the suspect pointed a firearm at the officer and the officer fired several rounds from his service weapon at the individual."

The two men escaped, and were being sought early Wednesday.
