A DeKalb County man accused in the death of a 22-year-old who was shot in the head while driving away from an argument has been arrested.

Antonio Grant of Ellenwood is charged with murder and aggravated assault, according to jail records, and was booked Saturday. DeKalb police confirmed Monday he’s a suspect in the death of Melvin Sanders III, who died Oct. 11 after his brother pried him from an argument with a group of men outside a Chevron station on Rockbridge Road.

The brother, Adul Sanders, whose family lives near the scene, told police his brother ran toward the gas station earlier that day, according to the police report. Adul Sanders went looking for his young brother to see what was wrong but couldn’t find him.

Adul Sanders went home and ate dinner but got worried and tried again, this time finding Melvin Sanders at the gas station, arguing with a group of men just before 10 p.m.

Adul Sanders told them his brother had mental issues and not to worry about him, the report said. The men said Melvin Sanders had threatened to shoot them.

Adul Sanders got his brother calmed down and started to drive him away from the station, which is at Rockbridge’s intersection with South Stone Mountain Lithonia Road. Then he heard gunshots and saw Melvin Sanders slump over in the seat, the report said.

The older brother took off his shirt to apply pressure to the wound, but it was too late.

It wasn’t immediately clear Monday if any of the other men in the argument will face charges.
