College Park’s mission of “going green” continues to broaden its scope as the city turned on the latest groundwater well next to the Bill Badgett Football stadium at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 26.

Groundwater originates from surface water and precipitation, including rain and melting snow, that has infiltrated the earth, filling the cracks and open spaces in the rocks and the soil. Saturated layers below the water table that store and transmit significant quantities of groundwater – i.e., enough to supply a well – are called aquifers.

According to the EPA groundwater wells can supply less expensive, cleaner water than surface water supplies.

This is now the fourth city-owned pumping station in use, able to yield nearly 460 gallons per minute.
