A measure that would allow the installation of automated speed cameras in school zones has been accepted on first reading by the Alpharetta City Council.

The proposed ordinance would allow “Automated Traffic Enforcement Safety Systems” in school zones from 6:50 a.m. to 4:50 p.m., Monday through Friday. The devices would record speed data, the image of a vehicle’s rear license plate, and the time, date and place of the incident.

Fines would be $75 for the first offense and $125 for subsequent offenses plus a $25 electronic processing fee. Signs would be posted advising drivers of the devices, and only warnings would be issued the first 30 days.

The measure is possible under HB 978, passed by the General Assembly in the 2017-18 session allowing photo/video enforcement in school zones.

That legislation requires photographic evidence sent to alleged violators, a website accessible to the public, and police review of all violations, according to a staff report to the council. Violations would be civil cases contestable in local courts.
