The Alpharetta City Council rejected a proposal Monday that would have increased license fees for insurance companies by 50 percent. The measure would have hiked annual fees from $100 currently to $150, bringing in an additional $26,700 a year to city coffers. By law, Georgia cities with populations over 50,000 can charge insurance companies a license fee of $150.

City Councilman D.C. Aiken balked at the proposal, saying "imposing a tax just because we can" would not be the best course of action.
