At least one campground at Allatoona Lake was not opening with the others Monday; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it was unable to find volunteers to serve as park hosts at the Old Highway 41 No. 3 Campground.

"During (the) COVID-19 pandemic, several sets of volunteers have backed out of positions, and we have been unable to maintain a volunteer workforce to operate the (Old Highway 41) campground," the Corps said in a Facebook posting.

“We will continue to recruit volunteers. When and if these positions are filled, this campground will also open to the public.”

The Payne, Victoria, Sweetwater, Stamp Creek and McKaskey campgrounds were to open Monday. Several sites have volunteer hosts, typically older couples who live and work summers at Allatoona Lake.

The corps’ Mobile District, which includes Allatoona Lake and Lake Lanier in the metro Atlanta area, previously announced campgrounds at recreational facilities it manages would open June 1 after being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
