The father of the man accused of killing an Athens police officer last year has been charged after an incident at his home in Clarke County.
Robert Hood, 64, was booked into the Athens Clarke-County jail Tuesday, according to jail records.
The incident began Monday when an off-duty officer, Sgt. Von Anderson, found Hood in a wrecked car near his home, the Athens Banner-Herald reported. Hood, who was apparently not injured in the wreck, smelled of alcohol and ignored Anderson's commands to stop as he walked toward his home, the Banner-Herald reported.
Two Athens-Clarke County police officers responded, and Hood began to verbally abuse them, the report said.
Anderson said that because of the Hood family's history of violence, they decided to back away from the incident and obtain an arrest warrant.
Hood was being held Wednesday on DUI charges.
Hood's son, Jamie Hood, is accused of fatally shooting Senior Police Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian on March 22, 2011.
Jamie Hood and his siblings are no strangers to trouble. A brother, Matthew, was charged along with Jamie of kidnapping a man who reportedly owed them money -- the incident that led to Christian's shooting.
Steven, the youngest child, was arrested weeks later on charges that he beat up his girlfriend.
Another brother,Tim Hood, had been in and out of jail for selling cocaine, breaking into a car and other felony charges before he was fatally shot by a police officer at age 22.
Three years later an ongoing feud with another family escalated to the point Robert Hood Sr. was severely beaten. Robert Hood. Jr. was arrested for firing shots to avenge his father’s injuries and Jacob Hood was shot in the leg after a retaliatory drive-by.
