Powder Springs leaders will hold a groundbreaking ceremony this month to celebrate the start of construction on a $10 million sporting complex.
The ceremony for the Westside Woods Sports Complex is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 5030 Hill Road in Powder Springs, the city said.
According to a news released from the city, the complex will sit on 22 acres and feature three full-size turf soccer fields with lights, two futsal courts that can be used as pickleball courts and a walking path. Futsal is similar to soccer, but is played on a basketball court with five-member teams and a low-bounce ball, the U.S. Youth Futsal's website states.
Westwide Woods Sports Complex will also have an indoor soccer field and a 40,000-square-foot building that will house retail space, concessions area, bar, offices and conference rooms, the city said.

“We believe this will be a catalytic development that will open up the C.H. James Parkway corridor to future businesses, but also help drive development in the city as a whole,” said Shaun Myers, special projects coordinator for the city of Powder Springs.

Stephanie Gabbert, chief operating officer for Westside Woods, said while the complex could boost tourism in Powder Springs from tournaments and other events, she said it also will be a “local resource to kids and adults, regardless of playing ability” and offer programming for the entire community.

“We’re just really excited to get started, and the city has been pretty amazing in helping support us to try to get this off the ground,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of exceptional local support and interest from business owners and other folks. We’re just glad that we’re able to join the Powder Springs business community and hopefully help lift everybody with this project as well.”
