Another day of record-breaking, triple-digit heat is forecast for Monday, but temperatures are expected to top out "only" in the mid-90s the remainder of the week.

Metro Atlanta remained under a heat advisory through 9 p.m. Monday, with afternoon temperatures expected to climb to around 100 degrees — one degree above the record high for the date set in 1954.

National Weather Service radar showed a few areas of rain and thunderstorms Monday morning in the far southwestern, western and northwestern suburbs of metro Atlanta.

On Sunday, Atlanta's high of 105 shattered the old record for the date of 99, also set in 1954. Highs elsewhere across the state on Sunday included 108 in Rome, Athens and Macon.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton is predicting a 40 percent chance of rain on Tuesday, along with highs around 96 degrees.

Minton's Independence Day forecast for Wednesday calls for a 30 percent chance of rain and an afternoon high of 96 after a morning low of 74.

That 30 percent chance of rain will continue on Thurdsay and Friday, with highs expected to be 94 on Thursday and 93 on Friday, Minton said.
