With the threat of severe winter weather now over, Gwinnett County officials are turning their attention to dropping temperatures and the possibility of icy conditions.

Some northern Atlanta suburbs saw a brief wintry mix or snow Tuesday morning but, because temperatures started the day higher than anticipated, the forecast calling for potentially severe weather was largely a bust. By noon, the winter weather advisory issued for north Georgia was canceled for all but two far northern counties — some seven hours ahead of schedule.

But temperatures are still expected to plummet later Tuesday and Wednesday morning, presenting the possibility of wet roads turning into icy ones, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. Temperatures are expected to drop into the low 20s overnight.

Gwinnett County spokesman Joe Sorenson said local authorities were preparing for that potential.

“Police and other county employees will be observing conditions and reporting any icy patches on roads or other issues to our Emergency Management Agency and county DOT,” Sorenson said. “Staff will be prepared to treat roads and critical facilities if needed.”

Georgia Gwinnett College and Gwinnett Technical College were both closed Tuesday in anticipation of winter weather. Gwinnett County Public Schools kept kids at home with a "digital learning day."

A GCPS spokesperson did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the school district’s plans for Wednesday.

The Snellville Police Department, for one, doesn’t appear all that worried.

"Roads are pretty much bone dry already here in Snellville," the agency tweeted Tuesday afternoon. "Your commute in/through the city should be good to go. Of course @LawrencevillePD could come down here with a water tanker and prank us all just to get another snow day."
