Forty-nine schools in DeKalb County have registered as official participants of Walk to School Day on Oct. 10.

The initiative, sponsored by the National Center for Safe Routes to School, is focused on making walking to local schools safer for students and therefore a more viable option for parents. Nearly 5,000 public and private schools, as well as early childhood centers, have signed up across the United States.

Employees from the DeKalb Fire Rescue Department will be assisting students at Woodward Elementary School in Brookhaven starting at 6:45 a.m. and at Cross Keys High School at 7:40 a.m.

The department has also committed to forming a school pedestrian safety committee to provide additional education and improvements near schools.

The first Walk to School Day was held in 1997. The National Center for Safe Routes to Schools also sponsors Bike to School Day in May.

The plan would take effect when a new elementary school opens in 2019.
