90-day ban on new telecom towers in Gwinnett rights of way

Sept 6, 2016

Gwinnett County has imposed a 90-day moratorium on new telecommunications structures in its rights of way.

The Board of Commissioners approved the moratorium Tuesday. It also called for the county transportation department to study the effects of such structures and report its findings in December.

Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash said the moratorium is a response to several applications for new types of telecommunication structures in county rights of way. Nash said they are “different from what we’ve seen before,” but did not elaborate.

The resolution approved Tuesday notes such structures could encroach on clear zones around local roads. The resolution indicates the county wants to “develop and refine appropriate regulations” concerning telecommunication structures.
