The Georgia Senate has approved a bill that could lead to the creation of a city of Stonecrest in South DeKalb.
The Senate voted 45-1 on Tuesday to pass Senate Bill 208, which now advances to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
A city of Stonecrest would have about 50,000 residents and border the city of Lithonia along I-20.
Stonecrest would take over three services from DeKalb County: planning and zoning, code enforcement and parks. The county would continue to provide police and other services.
If the bill passes the House and is signed by Gov. Nathan Deal, residents in the area would vote on whether to incorporate during a referendum in November.
